[Yellow Emperor's Inner Sutra: The Golden Chamber Mantra Treatise] Understanding the rhythms of the seasons, the body, nature and life

"Where does disease come from?"

Among the ancient Chinese medical texts, the Yellow Emperor's Internal Canon, the "Jingui Mantra Discourse" is regarded as the quintessence of truth.

The "Jin Kai" is a valuable metal library, and the "Mangon" are unchanging words of truth.

This chapter provides a surprisingly logical explanation for the connection between the occurrence of disease and seasons, organs, and time.

The close relationship between the four seasons and the five internal organs

The Yellow Emperor's Internal Canon states that seasonal changes in weather affect each of the five internal organs of the human body.

When that balance is disturbed, our bodies sense the imbalance as illness.

seasonAffected organsCommon areasCommon symptoms
springliverNeck and napeRunny nose, nosebleeds, hay fever
summerheartChest/flankPalpitations, hot flashes, insomnia
long summerspleenBack and abdomenDiarrhea, chills, fatigue
autumnlungShoulders and BackCough, asthma, fever
winterkidneyWaist, crotch, limbsChills, numbness, joint pain

When the seasons change, so do illnesses.

This "seasonal mismatch in symptoms" indicates that your body's rhythms are not in sync with nature.

This is what the Yellow Emperor's Internal Canon refers to as "pre-illness," meaning "a state in which you have not yet become ill, but there are signs."

Understanding the roots of illness through "seasons and body parts"

  • Neck pain in spring → Liver imbalance
  • My heart is burning in the summer → My heart is overheating
  • Back pain in autumn → Dry lungs
  • Cold legs and feet in winter → Kidney weakness

Storing up your essence = the foundation of life

If your essence is plentiful, you will be able to overcome seasonal evils and avoid getting sick.

  • Spring → No more fevers
  • Summer → Sweat doesn't leak too much
  • Autumn → No fever
  • Winter → Resistant to cold

Summary | Creating a body in harmony with nature

  • Illness begins with a misalignment of seasons, time, and yin and yang
  • The human body is part of nature, and being in harmony with the rhythm of nature is the key to good health.
  • The Golden Chamber Mantra is like a map that connects nature and the body

What we need to do is listen to our bodies, read the winds of the seasons, and follow the flow of yin and yang.

This is the first step in preventing illness and achieving true health.
